Motorists heading towards or from Leysdown were trapped in traffic because of the road block. Witnesses said some abandoned their cars and walked.

The crash happened at about 5pm at the junction with Warden Bay Road near the St Clements site of Eastchurch C of E primary school. The road was expected to reopen at 10.30pm.

On Wednesday morning police confirmed a woman in her 70s died at the scene after being hit by a white Seat Exeo.

Several police cars and at least two ambulances were seen at the location.

A witness said: "Apparently the road will be shut until forensics have finished.
