The angst of going up to ‘big school’ has been reduced thanks to a new support group for pupils – and parents.

Transition Information and Parental Support (TIPS) has been set up by Margaret Windeatt who is the parent support adviser at Minster College, Catherine Cartwright who is the family liaison officer at Cheyne Middle School and Guy Morgan who is a social work assistant.

The purpose is to offer information and support to parents and Year 8 students from the Island’s three middle schools in preparation of their transition to Minster College.

Mrs Windeatt said: “Our group can be adapted if necessary to meet the needs of planned big changes which could see the abolition of the middle schools and the establishment of an academy.

“We have had fabulous feedback from parents and pupils so far and have been planning the event since November last year. We are working in conjunction with various partners and have had display stands for sexual health clinics.

“We also provide information on expectations including rules and dress codes at the college, introducing key personalities and understanding the curriculum.”
