According to social media two young women aged 16 and 20 lived there with their pets. The women and animals were rescued but everything else was destroyed.

A mattress and other property could be seen strewn across the grass.

The roof of another chalet next door was damaged by the fire.

Women at the site insisted no one wanted to talk but one added: "She's lost everything."

The fire broke out just after 6am. Fires crews spent nearly two hours on the scene.

At the height of the blaze smoke could be seen billowing into the sky for miles around.

A spokesman for Kent Fie and Rescue Service said: "Three fire engines attended. Crews wore breathing apparatus while using hose reel and main jets to extinguish the flames which had started to spread to the roof of another property."

No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire is not yet known but one theory is an electrical fault.

The chalet is next to the Sheppey Beach Villas complex. Residents have been offering spare clothes.
