Greggs' first drive-thru in Kent to be joined by two takeaway units in Sittingbourne

Greggs’ first Kent drive-thru could be joined by two more fast-food joints.

Work is currently under way to convert the former Regis Medical Centre, in Saffron Way, Milton Regis, into a branch of the British bakery chain.

It's now been revealed that two buildings, which have also been approved at the site, will contain two smaller takeaway units.

A spokesman for Swale council said: "Unit one at the front of the property is the drive-thru unit, and at the rear of the site, another building is being constructed, which will contain two smaller takeaway units."

An opening date for the Greggs is yet to be announced.

The spokesman added: "There’s still a condition outstanding about closure of existing access onto Saffron Way, that needs to be discharged before they can open."

Plans were granted permission by Swale Borough Council last October, although the finer details, such as building standards and a plan for dealing with fumes and smells, still need approval before the store can open.

One benefit of the scheme is that Milton Creek Country Park will be able to finally open a car park - a 29-year-long ambition.

Previously, park ranger Kristian Staples, said: “When it was originally built an area was set aside.

“Since Greggs have bought the land for their new drive-thru and agreed to build an access road to the country park, an area with 60 spaces will be available to the public.

"This will have massive benefits for the country park and draw in more visitors.

“We’re hoping it will be open around October time.”

The construction work means this year's Milton Creek parkrun has had to be rerouted.

Swale council's spokesman explained: "We’ve worked with parkrun organisers to reroute the run so there’s no conflict between parkrunners and people driving to visit the park and using the new access to the car park on the park."

Parkrun Sittingbourne, which is run by volunteers, has been contacted for further comment.

Greggs are still unable to comment further, so its statement remains the same.

A spokesman said: "Greggs is due to open a new shop in Sittingbourne later this year and while we are unable to share any details now, we will be sure to share further information in the coming months."

Businesses for the new takeaway units on the site are being sought before construction is complete.

On a property letting website it has been confirmed that the first unit has been let to Greggs.

The rear unit is advertised at £45,000 per annum.

However the sellers, Harrisons Charted Surveyors, have said the cost may be split into two smaller units at £25,000 per unit per annum.
