Inside lane of M2 London-bound between Sittingbourne and Gillingham closed

Part of the M2 is closed for emergency repairs to a "small section of sunken road".

One lane of the London-bound carriageway between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone and Junction 4 at Gillingham has been coned off leading to traffic delays.

National Highways tweeted that the inside lane of two is closed due to "an infrastructure defect".

Its tweet added: "Contractors plan to complete the repairs tonight but very cold temperatures expected overnight may mean the lane closure becomes protracted.

"The defect is a small section of sunken road. One lane London-bound is still open for traffic to pass and repair crews are on their way."

When asked to clarify what "an infrastructure defect" meant, a National Highways spokesman said: "The defect isn’t a pot hole but a small section of sunken road."

This area was badly flooded by water during heavy rain earlier in the year.
