Sittingbourne firefighters were drafted in to help tackle a fire at Dungness B nuclear power station.

They were among 10 fire crews from across Kent which were summoned by the station’s own fire team to help with the blaze which broke out in unit 22 boiler annexe, which is related to the second reactor, just after midnight.

Martin Bultin, spokesman for British Energy, said: "Station personnel called the fire brigade who put it out quickly.

"We turned reactor 22 off. There was no release of radioactivity and no one was injured. We are looking into the cause."

He added: "The station fire team helped Kent Fire Service to put the fire out."

Sittingbourne crews remained at the scene until 5am. By 9am two fire crews remained on the scene, though the blaze was out.
