A drunk man smashed a pint glass over the head of his stepfather, who he believed was taking advantage of his mother.

It ended in a “bloodbath” when Kevin Halls also punched victim Gordon James in the face and headbutted him three or four times.

The 36-year-old has now been jailed for 16 months, and banned from going to his mother’s home for three years.

Prosecutor Ian Foinette said Halls, of Bassett Road, Sittingbourne, had not taken kindly to his mother Brenda remarrying.

He had been bailed to her home, in Menin Road, Kemsley, for a different matter and was not entirely happy about it, Maidstone Crown Court heard.

He returned after his curfew time of 10pm and his mother told him she did not want him there.

Halls returned to the house on January 26 after he had been drinking and went upstairs, where Mr James was using a computer.

He punched him, splitting his lip. Mr James told him he wanted him out.

Halls asked him: “What are you going to do about it?” Halls pushed him on to the bed, picked up the glass full of water and struck him on the head, telling him: “I am going to kill you.”

Mrs James, a carer, rushed into the room and asked her son: “What have you done? It’s like a bloodbath in here.”

After his arrest, Halls told a police officer: “Treat my mum like that. He’s lucky I didn’t kill him. That’s what happens when you love your mum.”

Halls, who admitted assault causing actual bodily harm, had previous convictions for threatening behaviour and common assault.

Defence lawyer John Fitzgerald said: “There was no love lost between the defendant and his mother’s husband.”

Judge Charles Macdonald QC said: “There is no mitigation in this case. It was a sustained attack and a weapon was used.”
