Man arrested after fire in Margate High Street

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing a fire in which a woman was injured.

The flat in Margate went up in flames at about 5.30am today, and the woman had to be pulled from the burning building by firefighters.

She was later taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze in the High Street.

Residents and neighbours were evacuated, but have now returned to their homes.

Officers made inquiries at the scene and have subsequently arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of arson endangering life.

A police spokesman said: “He remains in custody while an investigation continues.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to tackle the flames at the time.

High-pressure fans were then used to clear the property of smoke.
