Five teens, from Ramsgate and Canterbury, arrested in Margate following ‘moped joyride’

Five teenagers have been arrested following a spate of thefts from vehicles and an incident of arson.

The gang of boys, aged between 13 and 17, were apprehended in Margate earlier today.

A 13-year-old boy from Ramsgate was further arrested on suspicion of possessing a substance believed to be ketamine.

Officers believe the group stole sunglasses and mobile phones from vehicles before absconding with a moped, which was later found destroyed by fire.

Police were first called to reports of people trying car door handles in Botany Road, Margate at about 3.20am.

Upon arriving at the scene officers discovered the moped, which had been stolen from a driveway, burnt out.

Descriptions of the suspects were circulated among patrols in the area and five arrests were eventually made, one in Northdown Road and a further four in Palm Bay Avenue.

The stolen sunglasses and mobile phones were recovered.

Five teenage boys aged between 13 and 17 were arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and arson.

One of the teens, a 17-year-old from Canterbury was further arrested on suspicion of stealing from vehicles.

All five suspects remain in custody while inquiries continue.
