Staff who go the extra mile to help make tourists' time in Thanet as enjoyable as possible were rewarded for their efforts at the 2010 Pride in Thanet Awards.

Judges were inundated with hundreds of nominations for 12 different categories, but presented the top award for exceptional customer service to Nick MacAskill from Ramsgate fishmonger Eddie Gilbert's.

One nominee, who recorded a video message praising his work, described him as "very attentive" and said he makes visitors feel "very special."

Accepting his award at St Augustine's, Westgate-on-Sea, Mr MacAskill said he was "really chuffed," adding: "I've only been at Eddie Gilbert's for three months, but it's a great place to work, with some fabulous customers."

Johnny Lewis, breakfast show presenter on kmfm 107.2 for Thanet, compered last week's Pride in Thanet presentation.

Other winners included Tony Fran from No. 6 Brasserie, Market Place, Margate, who picked up the Hospitality Employee of the Year award and Dave Mermouth from Joss Bay Surf School, near Broadstairs, won the outdoor equivalent.

Cllr Shirley Tomlinson, cabinet member for environmental services at Thanet council, said: "These awards highlight the importance of customer care and the need to look after visitors and residents alike. It really makes a difference when people go out of their way to help us."

Julie Rook, deputy cabinet member for regeneration and economic development at Kent County Council, added: "Good customer service is good for business. Kent is an excellent destination and we need to ensure our visitors return and recommend our county to their family and friends."
