Spilled potato crop causes traffic mayhem

MASHED potatoes brought traffic chaos to part of Kent this morning, as a trailer carrying the crop overturned.

The vegetables spread themselves across the Thanet Way’s Monkton-bound carriageway soon after 7.40am, at the St Nicholas roundabout.

The accident caused immediate traffic problems as police were forced to close one side of the roundabout and caution drivers.

The potatoes were being smashed by cars and formed a dangerous slippery surface on the asphalt.

Police began forcing motorists to go down the Margate road, before doing u-turns and coming back up to the roundabout, where they were warned of the debris.

One driver lost control of his BMW approaching the roundabout and crashed. An ambulance and several other police cars attended the scene.

The road is still open and can be taken with care, but motorists are being advised to avoid the area as there are considerable delays.
