A £1.4m cannabis factory has been uncovered in a unit on an industrial estate in Tonbridge.

Police were alerted by a member of the public reporting suspicious activity around a business unit at Morley Road at around 10.45pm on Wednesday.

They discovered what they believe is a hydroponics set-up, with cannabis growing on the premises.

There were four growing rooms in use, with around 1,400 plants in total in different stages of growth. The approximate street value of the plants would be around £1,000 per plant. The fourth room had no plants in it but there were signs it had been used for cultivation.

Part of the premises had been adapted for people to live in and it's thought it would have been used by people acting as ‘gardeners’ - looking after the plants and ensuring the hydroponics systems were working.

Tonbridge and Malling District Chief Inspector Dave Pate said: "A cannabis factory like this isn’t unique, but is very unusual in West Kent."

Anyone who has any information that might help this investigation can contact police on 01732 370217.

Police would ask anyone who notices what they think is unusual activity around any premises to report the matter.
