Castle post office closed again

Tonbridge Post Office is closed again.

The temporary post office based at Tonbridge Castle will not re-open until January 3, said a spokesman for Post Office Limited.

The firm blamed "staffing issues."

Since the pop-up post office opened at the castle in August it has been plagued by both poor internet connectivity and staffing issues.

There have been several periods of closure, and the opening hours have been reduced.

The post office had been based within WHSmiths in the High Street, until the store closed on July 30.

From the start, the new branch has been unable to offer a full service: no passport checks, driving licence renewals or foreign currency for example.

Green Party councillors Mark Hood and Paul Stepto have been campaigning for it to be re-located to the town's library.

Tonbridge and Malling council leader Matt Boughton (Con) said: "I have written to the chief executive of the Post Office following their closure of the counter at Tonbridge Castle for the rest of the year.

"While we wait endlessly for a permanent location, I am concerned of the issues affecting the Post Office at the castle and am calling for greater resources from the Post Office in their services in Tonbridge."

Meanwhile the nearest post office branches are at York Parade, Higham Wood and Hildenborough.
