Coronavirus Kent: Castle Cars in Tonbridge offering free taxis to Sainsbury's for elderly and vulnerable shoppers

A taxi firm in Tonbridge is offering to drive elderly and vulnerable people to Sainsbury's for free, as the store announced how it will help elderly and vulnerable shoppers.

The supermarket will set aside the first opening hour at each of its stores tomorrow exclusively to those who may otherwise struggle to get essential supplies.

Drivers from Castle Cars on Morley Road will pick up customers from their house and take them to the Tonbridge and Hildenborough stores between 7am and 9am.

Terry Hill, owner of Castle Cars said: "We're pleased Sainsbury's is offering a designated time for vulnerable shoppers. We want to offer our services so those who need to visit during this time don't have to worry about taking their shopping on the bus.

"It's also a tough time for my drivers at the moment and I want to give them something that will boost their morale.

"I will offer this service for as long as I can. As long as the reserved hours are available, I will do my bit to help."

Sainsbury's said the extra hour means older shoppers are less likely to get caught up in crowds of people stockpiling.

Items such as paracetamol, hand sanitiser and toilet rolls have been flying off the shelves since coronavirus reached the UK.

Sainsbury's has also said from Monday, customers over the age of 70 and those with disabilities can have priority access to online delivery slots.

Other supermarkets including Iceland have introduced similar measures in the county.

If you know a elderly or vulnerable resident who would benefit from this service, call Castle Cars on 01732 363637.
