Tunbridge Wells man, 75, dies in hospital after being hit by van in Culverden Down

An elderly pedestrian has died in hospital after being hit by a van at the weekend.

The man, aged 75, suffered serious injuries after being hit by a white Volkswagen Transporter in Culverden Down, Tunbridge Wells, on Saturday.

The victim, who is from the same town, was taken to hospital but died yesterday morning.

The incident happened near the entrance to the football stadium at a time when spectators leaving the Tunbridge Wells FC v Erith Town match would have been in the area.

Tunbridge Wells FC said: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of a supporter after a tragic incident last Saturday outside The Culverden Stadium.

"We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

A 55-year-old man, who was driving the van, was arrested following the collision.

He has since been bailed until March 28.

Detective Sergeant Chris Wade, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), said: "The victim sadly died in hospital during the early hours of Wednesday, January 11, and we are continuing our inquires to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision.

"We remain keen to speak to anyone with information who has not yet contacted the police.

"If you witnessed the collision or saw the van in the moments leading up to it please don’t hesitate to contact us.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone with dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage that may assist the investigation."
