It may have passed you by, but Clean Air Day was this week.

The international campaign led by Global Clean Air and the Phillips Foundation did not escape the notice of Hawkhurst Parish Council.

The parish used the opportunity to petition Tunbridge Wells Borough Council for improvements to the village's air quality management area along the Cranbrook Road and the Highgate crossroads.

Council chairman Clare Escombe said: "From a parish point of view, we would like to see the HGV route through Hawkhurst diverted so that lorries have to stay on the A21 – they add significant pollution in Hawkhurst.

"We want an anti-idling campaign – especially along main roads and car parks - to discourage people from sitting with their motors running unnecessarily.

"There should be an increase in electric vehicle charging points to enable people to make the switch to cleaner power as well as fund to support cycling and walking opportunities."

"Finally, we want to see the provision of a local community bus rather than funding going to the county council to subsidise buses throughout Kent, that have no positive impact on Hawkhurst.

"At present there is significant congestion in the centre of the village which adversely affects the quality of life for those who live, work and visit our parish."
