Hever Castle & Gardens is pulling out all the stops to make this summer bank holiday weekend one to remember. Its Hever in History event, running on Saturday 27th, Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August, will see the grounds transform and step back in time to different historical periods.

Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience that’s both fun and educational, with encampments, re-enactments, crafts, cooking and displays from the Middle Ages right up to the 20th century.

.

Historical displays

Several Living History displays will take place daily between 10.30am and 6pm, as well as exciting, realistic Battle Displays on the Church Lawn and Half Moon Lawn.

You can get into the spirit by visiting the stalls to peruse authentic and mock items used throughout history, including shields, swords and knightly armour.

.

Jousting tournaments

One of the top highlights of Hever in History is the thrilling, action-packed jousting tournaments, which kick off at 2.15pm on the jousting field. Get there early, from 1pm, to secure the best spot in the medieval spectator stands!

Following the procession of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn from the Castle forecourt to the arena, the valiant Knights of Royal England will battle it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, competing for points to find this season’s ultimate champion.

.

Spellbound Summer activities

Throughout the bank holiday weekend, visitors of Hever Castle & Gardens can also take part in a series of free hands-on activities as part of Spellbound Summer, located at the Winter Lawn.

Find out how to cast spells and execute the perfect wand waving technique or pick up your broomstick and defend the castle from the dragon. Get involved in the Shield Quest by helping the knights track down their lost shields around the gardens and head into the Castle for the Dragon Egg Hunt.

.

Falconry displays

Falconry displays from Willow’s Bird of Prey Centre are a spectacular sight to behold at Hever Castle & Gardens this August bank holiday.

Expert falconers will fly real live eagles, falcons and owls and teach spectators lots about each species, from the food they love to the way they’re looked after. Displays take place twice a day at 11.30am and 3.45pm on the Church Lawn.

.
