The Cher Show review: Cher’s biggest hits come to life at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

There are very few artists who have remained as iconic for as many decades as the incredible Cher.

And while I've sang my heart out to Believe on many occasion and gasped when I first saw her Mama Mia appearance, the story behind the ultimate diva was completely unknown to me.

But thanks to The Cher Show, the highs and lows of her career and personal life from the 1950s to her more recent Twitter antics are shared through a creative and exciting story.

Written by Tony and Olivier Award-winning Rick Elice, began in Canterbury last night and takes audiences on a journey through the incredible life of the timeless entertainer.

The show introduces fans to the most influential people of Cher’s career, including her mother Georgia Holt, her husband Sonny Bono and her fashion guru Bob Mackie.

By using three incredible performers it gave a really interesting perspective of her life. The young excited Cher who had big dreams of being a star was watched over by her successful older selves.

Played by Debbie Kurup, Ingrid Olivia and Jasmine Jules Andrews, the trio impersonated Cher well while still being outstanding performers in their own right.

On occasion I'd think one was singing only to see her mouth closed while the other belted out the classics. A real testament to their talents at playing the diva.

The ensemble performers were stunning and, as a Strictly fan, the influence of choreographer Oti Mabuse was clear to see with their powerful stances and strong shapes.

Making its Broadway debut in 2018, the Cher Show racked up two Tony Awards and became an instant crowd pleaser.

With direction and choreography from two Strictly Come Dancing greats, Arlene Phillips and Oti Mabuse, and a cast from West End sensations Six, Bat Out of Hell, The Bodyguard and Rent, this latest production boasts some serious talent.

The musical features a whopping 35 of Cher’s biggest hits, including If I Could Turn Back Time, Believe, I Got You Babe and the Shoop Shoop Song.

Discover how Cher became the iconic trailblazer and international entertainer we all know and love.

The Cher Show is at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, from Tuesday, June 14 to Sunday, June 19. Book online or call 01227 787 787.
