There are plenty of things to do in Calais and the beautiful neighbouring cities and coastlines, which are just a short drive away. So, what are some of the best destinations and sights to visit this season?

Calais town

Just hop off the ferry and you’re in Calais. The town is characterised by cosy streets, stunning architecture and historic landmarks. One of the main attractions is the town hall, which has a 75-metre high belfry. The Tour du Guet, a thirteenth-century tower and the oldest building in the city, is also well worth a visit!

Calais beach

Calais beach is a popular choice for a family day out. The white beach huts that line the sand create a picturesque scene and there are countless animal species to marvel at. Take a stroll across the promenade and get a bite to eat while the kids enjoy a ride on the iconic fire-breathing Calais Dragon!

What’s more, at Cap Blanc-Nez beach, which is just 10km west of Calais, you’ll find beautiful white cliffs and headland walks with breathtaking views.

Boulogne

Boulogne-sur-Mer

Another gorgeous spot to explore is Boulogne-sur-Mer. This beautifully preserved old town has everything you could wish for – quirky shops, delicious seafood restaurants and family-friendly cultural attractions.

During your day trip or mini-break, you can visit Basilica Notre Dame, which has the longest crypt in France, or Nausicaá Centre National de la Mer, a public aquarium housing more than 58,000 creatures.

Lille

Just over an hour’s drive from Calais is Lille. Often described as a cultural hub, the city has something for everyone. The Place du Général de Gaulle (Grand Place) is located right in the city centre, with many beautiful buildings, shops, restaurants and cafes surrounding the square.

Lille city hall, Lille Zoo and the Palais des Beaux-Arts museum, which features works by Monet, van Gogh, Donatello and Picasso, should also be at the top of your to-do list!
